What does the certified pro do?
EPA says the most common and usually most reliable method in basement homes is active subslab suction, also called subslab depressurization. Other options include drain tile suction, sump hole suction, or block wall suction. A basement pressurization system can reduce radon by about 50% to 99%.
How do I know the contractor is legal?
Kentucky law bars anyone from doing radon mitigation without proper certification since January 1, 2013. A contractor must hold a mitigation contractor registration certificate. That requires proof of a board-approved proficiency program and general liability insurance.
When is mitigation required?
Kentucky recommends mitigation when indoor radon reaches 4.0 pCi/L or higher. Mitigation must continue until levels fall below 4.0 pCi/L. Fayette County, which includes Lexington, is an EPA Zone 1 county with the highest predicted indoor radon levels.
What to do next
- Order a free radon test kit from the Kentucky Radon Program or test your basement with a short-term test.
- If results reach 4.0 pCi/L or higher, request quotes from certified radon mitigation contractors.
- Verify each contractor's Kentucky mitigation contractor registration certificate and certification before you hire.
- Ask each pro for proof of licence and insurance, and confirm the method (such as subslab suction) and cost in writing.
